Gina : Where it All Began

Writer: Manea AhmedManea Ahmed

Howdy Fam !,

The coffee journey has many surprises and methods that everyone tries to be different at. Yet , some of the coffee equipments tend to not to live up to its hype, Let me explain myself !

Getting to explore coffee from all the around the world got myself thinking why do newbie baristas over emphasis on standard equipment , standard numbers and ratios that limits there brewing and pour over techniques to boundaries where it doesn't give its full potential.

When I started my journey two years ago , I was overly excited about the usual standard equipment we hear about everyday , not to say that they are bad in anyway they still produce some quality pour overs if done properly , but I have always told myself that :

"There is something missing .."

I have always liked full ,rich body pour overs ,and a fresh morning morning breeze, because great beginnings starts with a great coffee cup of coffee.

Wet Your Filters, Pour the Grounds, and Let's Talk Business :

Let's put it into simple terms , what makes up a good coffee ? Simply , everyone has his own taste that is geared towards to their perfect cup. The more the variables that you can play with, the more the factors that you can count in and control for you to produce your own recipe. I will be covering an experiment that I ran myself at the shop,I have used Brazilian beans from Rocket Bean Roasters on the Gina to pull my shot of the day.

On the contrary I will be using some generic Brazilian Beans from a local coffee roaster , using a basic home brewing equipment that you can find on the top of the shelves at most coffee equipment selling stores around here.

"What Makes Gina Different Than Other Pour Overs is its Ability to Control to Flow"

The video below demonstrates the ability to control the flow when grounds are wetted. For those who are not familiar with using valves that control the speed of the flow, it basically contributes to the fullness and how much coffee is extracted in each pour. A basic rule of thumb is (Assuming the ratios and grind size are fixed) , the slower the flow , the more is the extraction ( More time spent into cooking the grounds in the cone ) , the heavier / fuller body you get as a result , but that does not mean that we want to make all of our shots extracted slowly because that really depends on a lot of other factors , which makes brewing a lot more fun and enjoyable. Spice it up 😁 !

There are other benefits by which Gina shines at such as ; the ability to make your favorite slow pace brew coffee whether its iced / hot brews.Immersion brewing is supported as well.

Smart Gina pushes the boundaries a little bit more by adding a smart scale , so you don't have to carry an additional scale around. You can save , publish , archive your brews so you can get back to it later on Gina's application which is a community based app which you can share the rates and your personal stats online.

Let us know your thoughts ! Have you had any experience with certain pour-over techniques that became your favorite ? Have you ever considered trying other techniques but you felt that you are limited by certain factors ?
